EU comission dissatisfied with Facebook

European Commission threatens to take action against Facebook, because of recent changes in privacy settings, making personal information available to anyone by default. This is in contradiction with the enactment of EU policy for more privacy on the Internet, especially minors, citing Euractiv.

European Commissioner responsible for data protection commissioner Viviane Reding announced its “concern” about the changes in Facebook in a speech today at the commemoration day for the European Safer Internet in Strasbourg.

Despite increasing pressure to improve the protection of user data in social networks, Facebook surprisingly changed its privacy policy in late January, making easy access to personal information to its site.

From January on Facebook profiles can be accessed by default. Users who wish to control the protection of their data would have to make their profiles private, so that they remain visible to their friends.

Before this change, the situation was exactly the opposite – I profiles private by default and may become public only if consumers want it.

“I am amazed by this sudden change in policy. I can not understand it because it is in the interest of social networking sites to give consumers control over their personal data, “said Reding.

Facebook attacks are due to report to the Commission of measures taken by social networks for data protection, in which Facebook is one among the leading Internet companies in terms of protecting consumer data.

The report is the first evaluation due to the voluntary agreement signed in 2009 by the largest Internet social networks, operating within the EU, which include Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Bebo and Daily Motion.
25 companies pledged to implement measures to protect data, because of pressure from national and European institutions.

The first evaluation found that most social networks improve data protection, providing security advice for young users.

Facebook Testing New URL Shortener

Picture 34URL shorteners, like bit.ly, have become a popular way for people to share links on Twitter while taking up as few of the allotted 140 characters as possible. But saving space is just one of the benefits that shorteners provide. Others include getting traffic analytics like how many people are sharing links from which sites. So it’s especially interesting that Facebook is rolling out what appears to be its own URL shortening service, called fb.me.

A URL shortener makes increasing sense as a Facebook feature, because the site is trying to be more open and connected to other web sites and Internet-connected devices.

Facebook recently began automatically shortening URLs that appear in its mobile interface. So, instead of text link to a Facebook photo appear as http://m.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=35877484&id=1310743&l=a373e8038d, you might see it see as http://fb.me/3Bkj7CW, as Polaris Ventures’ Ryan Spoon noticed (see his screenshot, below).

fbme

Fb.me also works as a substitute for any other Facebook page. So if you can write http://fb.me/starbucks instead of http://www.facebook.com/starbucks, as blogger Saad Kamal points out, meaning brands with Pages can more easily do things like share links to Facebook on Twitter.

Facebook has spent the last year improving mobile access to its services through its own mobile web site and device-specific apps as well as through tools for developers, carriers and device-makers to build their own apps and services. A shortened URL makes especially good sense here. In the screenshot, showing Facebook text alerts, you can clearly see that the shortened URL provides a simpler, easier to read user interface.

The company has made Facebook Connect a focus this past year, introducing ways for people to sign in to other sites using their Facebook identities and share information back and forth between those sites and Facebook. It has also been pushing users to be more open, most recently changing its privacy settings to get people to make content they share on Facebook also available on the web. It’s possible that the company will make fb.me the default for any content that users share publicly, in the hopes that the shortened URLs make for easier re-sharing.

It would also not be surprising to see Facebook provide analytics around shortened URLs, especially for Page content so Page owners can track web-wide sharing. Other increasingly common shortened URL features, like customizing the URL ending, would also make sense — especially given the option Facebook introduced earlier this year to let users and Page owners create their own vanity URLs.

An Open Letter from Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg

It has been a great year for making the world more open and connected. Thanks to your help, more than 350 million people around the world are using Facebook to share their lives online.

To make this possible, we have focused on giving you the tools you need to share and control your information. Starting with the very first version of Facebook five years ago, we’ve built tools that help you control what you share with which individuals and groups of people. Our work to improve privacy continues today.

Facebook’s current privacy model revolves around “networks” — communities for your school, your company or your region. This worked well when Facebook was mostly used by students, since it made sense that a student might want to share content with their fellow students.

Over time people also asked us to add networks for companies and regions as well. Today we even have networks for some entire countries, like India and China.

However, as Facebook has grown, some of these regional networks now have millions of members and we’ve concluded that this is no longer the best way for you to control your privacy. Almost 50 percent of all Facebook users are members of regional networks, so this is an important issue for us. If we can build a better system, then more than 100 million people will have even more control of their information.

The plan we’ve come up with is to remove regional networks completely and create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of your friends, or everyone.

We’re adding something that many of you have asked for — the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create or upload. In addition, we’ll also be fulfilling a request made by many of you to make the privacy settings page simpler by combining some settings. If you want to read more about this, we began discussing this plan back in July.

Since this update will remove regional networks and create some new settings, in the next couple of weeks we’ll ask you to review and update your privacy settings. You’ll see a message that will explain the changes and take you to a page where you can update your settings. When you’re finished, we’ll show you a confirmation page so you can make sure you chose the right settings for you. As always, once you’re done you’ll still be able to change your settings whenever you want.

We’ve worked hard to build controls that we think will be better for you, but we also understand that everyone’s needs are different. We’ll suggest settings for you based on your current level of privacy, but the best way for you to find the right settings is to read through all your options and customize them for yourself. I encourage you to do this and consider who you’re sharing with online.

Thanks for being a part of making Facebook what it is today, and for helping to make the world more open and connected.

Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook addiction

8:15 a.m. The alarm rings. I hit the snooze button and, five minutes later, the alarm goes off again. I turn it off and decide to just sleep in for the day.

While lying in bed, I realize that I have a Mandarin quiz this morning, so I can’t sleep in. I sprint around the room doing my morning preparations.

I glance over at the laptop on my desk and realize that I have yet to check my e-mail or Facebook for the day. Just five minutes, I tell myself. I’ll just check my notifications and then I’ll go to breakfast.

“I never log off,” said Sabrina Pol ‘13. “It’s more convenient to just click on a button and be on Facebook.”

Cyber Security Is a Shared Responsibility

Michael Kaiser is the executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a U.S.-focused nonprofit organization that works to keep people secure online. The organization focuses its efforts on cyber security education to provide information and tools for people to take control over preventing cyber crimes and attacks. As October and National Cyber Security Awareness month come to a close, we asked Michael to share his thoughts on precautions people should take online.

Many people believe they know their way around the digital world as well as or better than the physical world. Everything from paying bills to phone calls to distant relatives can now be done online. People store some of their most important documents, photos and financial information electronically — and seem to be more organized than ever. Yet while people may be cyber savvy and on the cutting edge of digital culture, they may not be cyber secure.

It turns out that we are only as protected as the weakest link in our network, so if you don’t take precautions, you’re not just endangering yourself. You also are impacting your friends and family. For instance, a “cyber criminal” can leave his entire network at risk by using an easily guessed password like the word “password” for his email account. This innocent person inadvertently becomes an enabler of cybercrime by not being cautious.

With a growing number of people online for a significant portion of every day, it’s not surprising that more people are particularly visible and vulnerable targets of cyber criminals. Often, a healthy dose of common sense and knowledge about threats are the first step. Keep these 10 tips in mind as you get on the path to becoming cyber savvy.

1. Protect your personal information. Know who is going to see it and understand the value of it and why the other party needs it before you share.
2. Create complex and lengthy passwords that include letters, numbers and symbols. Be sure to change them often, and keep in mind “password1″ doesn’t make the cut.
3. Don’t use public networks to conduct private business.
4. Set your security software, operating system and browser to update automatically.
5. Conduct transactions only on secure sites. Look for “shttp” or “https” in the URL.
6. Use privacy, safety and other settings on social networks.
7. Understand threats and learn more at the NCSA website and the Facebook Security Page.
8. Back up important information regularly to keep your music, photos and work protected.
9. Physically protect your computer, too. If you wouldn’t leave your credit card unattended in a public location, you shouldn’t leave your computer either.
10. Report cyber crimes.

Remember it is our shared responsibility to stay cyber secure. Keep updated on how you can help yourself, your friends and family by becoming a fan of the Facebook Security Page and the National Cyber Security Alliance Page.

Michael hopes you’ll check out the NCSA cyberskits to learn the do’s and don’ts of cyber security.
